“Hi Yolanda! What is Underneath my Soul about?”
Y: ‘Underneath my Soul’ is a life collection of poetry and written over a 10 year period of my life. This book gives you an insight in the process of growing up and becoming an adult through poetry. ‘Underneath my Soul’ is a poetry book with a difference. It faces you with the raw ideas and thoughts of a writer transitioning through adolescence, young adulthood, and finally as an adult. In which the world is discovered in a completely different light.
“When did you first realise you wanted to write poetry?”
Y: There was never a moment of realisation, it was a very natural process and it was not until after 10 years of writing that I decided to do something with my words!
“Tell us about the cover and how this idea came about?”
Y: The cover was taken in Athens, Greece. It is in one of my favourite parks in the city and I used to read there and my friend photographed me sitting and doing what I love to do! The object is to not see my face as poetry does not have a specific face. It can be perceived in different ways, just like the front cover.
“What is your favourite poem from ‘Underneath my Soul’?
Y: My favourite poem from ‘Underneath my Soul’ is ‘Bombs’ – as it speaks about war, criminal acts and the suffering in which we tend to ignore these days
“Lastly, where do you come from and what is your background?”
Y: “ I’m Yolanda De Iuliis and I come from Ayrshire, Scotland but grew up with an Italian/Irish background as my father’s family originated from Italy and my mother’s family originated from Northern Ireland. I currently study Classical Studies along with Modern Greek and I am the writer of ‘Underneath my soul’ and The Memoirs of ‘I’.”
